Signs You Need a New AC Unit in Orlando
When repair stops making sense
There is no honest way to put a one-size-fits-all number on it. Replacement makes sense when the math, the climate, and the equipment all line up against keeping the old system. Here are the five signs we use on every call to make that recommendation in good faith.
1. The system is 12+ years old
Florida's heat and humidity shorten HVAC life expectancy compared to what manufacturers publish. A unit rated for 15 years up north will often top out at 10–12 here. Past that, you are mostly paying to delay an inevitable replacement.
2. The repair-cost-times-age rule of thumb
We multiply the proposed repair cost by the age of the unit. If the result is over $5,000, replacement usually wins long-term. A $700 repair on a 7-year-old unit ($4,900) is borderline. The same repair on an 11-year-old unit ($7,700) is almost always wasted money.
3. R-22 refrigerant systems
If your system is old enough to use R-22 ("Freon"), refrigerant repairs are now eye-wateringly expensive — R-22 has been phased out and remaining stockpiles are scarce. We will tell you straight: keep the band-aids minimal and plan replacement.
4. Your power bill keeps climbing without explanation
A failing compressor, declining coil performance, or refrigerant losses all show up as power bills creeping upward. A modern variable-speed heat pump can cut Central Florida cooling costs by 25–40% — often paying for the premium of a higher-tier system in 4–6 years.
5. Comfort and humidity stop being right
Even a working AC can fail at its real job. If your home feels clammy at the right setpoint, if upstairs is always 4° warmer than downstairs, if the AC short-cycles on mild days — the system has stopped sizing the home correctly. Replacement plus a fresh Manual J load calculation is the fix.
